Tips for 4-betting in Texas Hold'em

4-betting can put your opponent on edge but may also backfire if you’re not careful

In the high-stakes world of Texas Hold’em poker, mastering the art of 4-betting can be a game-changer. A 4-bet is a bold and aggressive move, typically made with premium hands like pocket aces or kings, to extract maximum value from your opponents. However, executing it effectively requires careful consideration and strategy.

Not all hands are suitable for a 4-bet. Focus on the top-tier hands like AA, KK, and sometimes QQ or AK. These hands have a high probability of being ahead pre-flop, making them ideal for a strong 4-bet.

Your position at the poker table is crucial when 4-betting. It’s usually more profitable to 4-bet from late positions, as you have more information about your opponents’ actions. This allows you to make better-informed decisions.

The size of your 4-bet should be substantial enough to make it costly for your opponents to call. A common guideline is to raise between 3-5 times the initial raise, depending on the game dynamics and your opponent’s tendencies.

To avoid becoming too predictable, don’t 4-bet every premium hand you receive. Mix in some bluffs with hands like suited connectors or weaker broadway cards. This keeps your opponents guessing and can lead to more profitable 4-bets.

Pay attention to your opponents’ playing styles. Are they tight or loose? Do they fold to aggression or call frequently? Adjust your 4-bet strategy accordingly. Against tight players, you can 4-bet lighter for value, while against loose players, tighten your 4-betting range.

Your table image plays a significant role in how your 4-bets are perceived. If you’ve been playing conservatively, a sudden 4-bet will be more intimidating. Conversely, if you’ve been aggressive, opponents might see it as another move.

While 4-betting is a strong move, be prepared to fold if your opponent shows significant aggression in response. Don’t commit your entire stack if you’re not confident in your hand’s strength.

4-betting should not be overused. Waiting for the right moments and opponents is essential. Be patient, and when the time is right, strike decisively.
