If the board is heavily coordinated, such as with potential straights or flushes, your opponent may suspect a strong holding and hesitate to call a large bet. On a dry board with minimal draws, they might be more inclined to pay off a big bet with a weaker holding.
Your opponent’s profile plays a critical role. Against aggressive players who bluff often, checking on the river can induce a bet from them, allowing you to trap them for maximum value. However, against cautious or passive players, leading out with a bet is typically more effective, as they are less likely to bet into you without a strong hand.
