The long-time poker pro will take part in today’s competition
One of the most popular players of all time will attend Friday’s World Poker Tour (WPT) Premier Meet-Up Game (MUG) at Wynn Las Vegas. Gus Hansen, AKA “Great Dane,” was a favorite among fans during the 2000s poker boom, frequently competing on popular broadcasts like High Stakes Poker and Poker After Dark.
Hansen will sit down for the Premier MUG starting at 9 AM PT on Friday in a few low-stakes No-Limit Hold’em games against regular fans and several prominent pros, including popular poker vloggers Andrew Neeme and Brad Owen and poker icon Phil Ivey.
The MUG is the first event of the approaching WPT World Championship, which holds the largest guaranteed prize pool in tournament poker history of $40 million and runs from December 12-21.
The 2022 Premier MUG featured a star-studded lineup that comprised WPT commentators Vince Van Patten and Tony Dunst, DJ Steve Aoki and poker pro Patrik Antonius.
The “Great Dane” has more than $10 million in live tournament earnings, according to The Hendon Mob, but has cashed only once since 2014. He was among the top players on the World Poker Tour and among the top all-time in several WPT categories.
Hansen is second all-time in Main Tour wins, one behind Darren Elias with four. He has seven WPT final table appearances and more than $4 million in WPT cashes, with his biggest being $1.7 million for his runner-up finish at the 2007 WPT World Championship.
“Gus is one of the original superstars of the World Poker Tour and holds a special place in WPT lore as the first-ever WPT Champion,” said WPT CEO Adam Pliska. “We are honored to have him as a part of the opening activity of the WPT World Championship festival.”
