The Mexican poker pro also led his team, Los Jefes, to victory in the debut Team Tournament
Ángel Guillén had a dream run at WPT Australia, taking home two titles in just 72 hours while also leading his team, Los Jefes, to victory in the debut Team Tournament. The WPT Global Ambassador earned a combined AU$321,000 (US$209,000) from his wins in the AU$5,000 (US$3,250) Mad Max and AU$20,000 (US$13,000) Super High Roller, along with a US$10,000 seat to the WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas this December.
Guillén called the week a “dream for any poker player,” telling his wife and WPT host Lynn Gilmartin that winning two tournaments in one series felt surreal. His impressive form not only showcased his skill at the tables but also highlighted his leadership as captain of Los Jefes in the Team Tournament format, a new addition to the WPT Australia schedule.
Each team in the event contributed AU$2,000 (US$1,300) per player to a AU$24,000 (US$15,600) prize pool. Guillén’s squad — which included Sergio Barrios, Bernardo Crespo, Tomás Szwarcberg, and Diego Ponce — dominated from the outset. Los Jefes finished with 3,605 points, far ahead of runner-up “Not a Hobby,” to claim the AU$12,000 (US$7,800) top prize.
In the Mad Max event, Guillén relied on confidence and sharp instincts. “Everything clicked,” he said, describing how calculated aggression helped him secure the first trophy. His Super High Roller victory came under tougher conditions after a sleepless night, culminating in an emotional heads-up match against teammate Barrios.
Guillén emphasized that success at the felt goes beyond technical ability. “Poker has evolved, but mindset and emotional control are everything,” he said. Balancing poker, family, and focus has been key for the Mexican pro, who currently ranks second on his country’s all-time earnings list. With Sydney behind him, Guillén now turns his attention to the WPT World Championship in Las Vegas — bringing momentum, confidence, and a growing legacy with him.
