Two back-to-back wins catapult the player to the top of the charts
Umut Ozturk has made poker history by becoming the first-ever two-time Player of the Year (POY) winner on the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT). Following his outstanding performance in 2024, Ozturk successfully defended the title he claimed in 2023, cementing his legacy within the MSPT community.
Throughout the 2024 season, Ozturk showcased remarkable consistency with 19 cashes totaling $145,143. Among his highlights was a runner-up finish at May’s MSPT Sycuan Casino event, where he earned $50,693.
His ability to repeatedly make deep runs in a competitive field is further evidenced by his record—he’s one of only four players in MSPT history to achieve more than 12 cashes in a single season, having accomplished this milestone twice.
Ozturk’s journey to the 2024 POY title was far from straightforward. He faced stiff competition from notable players such as Josh Reichard, Chris Meyers, and Chris Moon.
Despite starting the year nearly 2,000 points behind Reichard, Ozturk’s late-season surge, including a pivotal final table appearance at MSPT Ameristar in Chicago, put him in striking distance. When Reichard was unable to compete in the season’s final event, Ozturk capitalized on the opportunity to secure his second consecutive title.
Reflecting on his achievement, Ozturk expressed gratitude toward his peers, calling the experience humbling and crediting the Minnesota poker community for their support. Despite his historic back-to-back wins, Ozturk revealed he has no plans to pursue a third title in 2025. Instead, he plans to focus on coaching his son in various sports and spending more time with his family.
This milestone caps a memorable year for the MSPT, which is set to surpass $200 million in total prize money awarded since its inception in 2009.
