The long-time poker pro continues to excel as he looks for a purple jacket
The most recent final table at the Poker Masters was the eighth of 10 featured in this year’s series in Las Vegas. Only two events remain in a wide open field competing for the Purple Jacket and the $50,000 Championship Bonus given to the player at the top of the leaderboard. Stephen Chidwick was the winner in Event #8, taking home $400,000 after beating Sam Soverel heads-up.
Chidwick held 57% of the chips as the final six began play during his most dominant series performance. On Day 1, Chidwick took down several competitors, including two notable players, Daniel Negreanu and Jeremy Ausmus, in one hand. Jason Koon finished eighth for $50,000, followed by Isaac Haxton in seventh to win $62,500.
With Chidwick holding 4.34 million chips after Day 1, it looked like he would take the bulk of the $1.25 million prize pool. Chino Rheem would be the first to be eliminated after Chidwick’s bottom two pair held up against his two kings, sending him home in sixth place for $75,000.
Chidwick was taking down all challengers, with Darren Elias falling next. The four-time WPT winner and Poker Masters event winner in this series scored $100,000 for fifth place after his KH, JD failed to catch Chidwick’s AS, 9S, with all chips in the middle pre-flop. Chris Brewer finished fourth for $125,000, and Alex Foxen was the next to be taken down by Chidwick, cashing $175,000 in third place.
Chidwick’s monster stack of 6,675,000 chips would go heads-up against Soverel’s 825,000, with the British player finishing him off a short time later to take the $400,000 top prize. Soverel would win $262,500 as runner-up.
