A $64 buy-in resulted in a prize of over $58,000 and Akerreta’s first live poker tournament title
Spain’s Gorka Akerreta delivered one of the feel-good stories of the year after turning a low-cost online satellite into a career-defining live win in Madrid. The Pamplona native outlasted a 360-entry field to claim the €888 (US$1,032) 888poker Live Madrid Main Event, earning €50,000 (US$58,000) and his first major live title.
Akerreta secured his seat through a €55 (US$64) online qualifier, arriving with little fanfare and a short list of prior results. That changed at Casino Gran Via, where he stayed composed through three days of play and closed out the event with a quick heads-up victory over Raul Gordo. The win carried extra meaning, as Akerreta said the payout would be a major boost for his family.
Primarily an online player, Akerreta has been involved in poker for about eight years. A recent back injury forced him into retirement from work, making the tournament result even more timely. Despite the life-changing score, he said he plans to stay grounded and continue learning rather than chasing a full-time live schedule.
The final table opened with Akerreta near the top of the counts and he wasted little time applying pressure. Early knockouts helped him build momentum, including a key hand where his ace-seven cracked pocket queens. From there, he navigated several tense spots, winning crucial river decisions to take control late.
Daniel Wu briefly surged ahead during four-handed play, but Akerreta responded by winning the tournament’s largest pot, flipping ace-queen against pocket tens and improving to take a commanding lead. That hand shifted the entire dynamic of the table.
Heads-up play was short and decisive. Akerreta entered with a large advantage and finished the job within a few hands, flopping two pair to seal the title. From a modest satellite entry to a six-figure payday, Akerreta’s run was a reminder that poker’s biggest moments can come from anywhere.
