Sean Perry was holding out for the $4M top prize but crashed when one of his picks lost
The average sports bettor would likely be satisfied with a $400,000 score and a chance to play for $4 million more. However, high-stakes professional poker player and sports gambler Sean Perry missed that opportunity as the $1,000 buy-in Circa Survivor NFL pool field was reduced to 13 players last week. Twelve players agreed to the same deal, with Perry the only holdout after he chose to play for all the marbles.
The 27-year-old son of poker pro Ralph Perry would choose to make a counter-offer where he would take $2 million. “I said, ‘With all respect, I’m the best bettor in the world. There’s no way I’m ever chopping. I wish you guys all the best. I’ll see you at the finish line,’” he revealed to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
“Why would I chop when I have an edge? If you do $400K each, any money I take out of the prize pool is money I’m, in theory, losing because I have an edge.”
Despite Perry’s confidence, he would be eliminated from the pool with six other players after the Broncos lost to the Patriots 26-23 last weekend. The competition drew 9,267 players, with nearly $9.3 million paid to the winner.
It seems appropriate that Perry would venture into poker and gambling. His dad, Ralph, had over $3.7 million in live tournament winnings and a World Series of Poker bracelet in 2006, where he cashed $207,817.
Perry has over $6.8 million in live tournament winnings, including several major cashes and PokerGO high-roller titles. He also had big moneyline winners in the last two Super Bowls, taking home almost $2 million.
