She’ll host the podcast with FiveThirtyEight founder Nate Silver
Author Maria Konnikova of The Biggest Bluff, who found her calling in poker, and FiveThirtyEight founder Nate Silver are collaborating on a new weekly podcast, “Risky Business.” The podcast revolves around the art of making sound decisions in poker and daily life, offering insights from the pair’s experiences as journalists and high-stakes poker players. The new series from iHeartPodcasts and Pushkin Industries launches on May 16.
Konnikova, a doctor of psychology, unintentionally rose to the status of a pro poker player, winning more than $500,000 at the tables while doing research for her book.
Konnikova and Silver will participate in this summer’s World Series of Poker. While Risky Business focuses on covering the event, Silver will also discuss politics and the upcoming US presidential race.
Silver is a well-known personality in the US, who has made a name for himself in political and statistical analysis. The founder and former editor-in-chief at FiveThirtyEight is renowned for his election forecasts.
Silver left ABC News a year ago and is also a skilled poker player, with over $800,000 in lifetime tournament winnings. His upcoming book, “On the Edge,” explores gambling and risk-taking and offers valuable insights into these subjects.
“We’ll talk about the probabilities as well as tactics and strategy around politics and current events,” remarked Silver. “How do things like expected value or game theory affect the decisions that impact all of our lives?”
Konnikova also discussed the new podcast, saying, “When you play high-stakes poker, you don’t just learn how to play cards; you learn how to think about the world. You learn a clear, useful framework for making all kinds of hard decisions. In Risky Business, we’ll help listeners understand this framework and learn to apply it to the decisions in their own lives.”
