Janssen received a 3-year prison sentence for orchestrating a massive bank fraud
Michigan poker player George Janssen was sentenced on April 10 to 36 months in federal prison for orchestrating a massive bank fraud scheme. Judge David M. Lawson of the US District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan also ordered Janssen, who had also faked his own kidnapping, to serve three years of supervised release following his term.
The court mandated a restitution payment of $908,235 to the affected financial institutions. This sentencing concludes a high-profile case involving a scheme that defrauded nearly a dozen banks through fraudulent auto loan checks.
The legal proceedings detailed a fraud that spanned from June 2016 through October 2023, totaling approximately $3.93 million in illicit gains. Janssen’s defense attorney, Keith E. Corbett, attributed the criminal activity to financial hardships experienced by Janssen’s car dealership during the pandemic.
Janssen had previously claimed his actions were the result of an extortion plot following a 2023 kidnapping, but federal investigators dismissed these claims as a fabrication. Despite requesting a lighter 24-month sentence to play poker for restitution money, the judge opted for a three-year term.
The impact of Janssen’s conviction has resonated throughout the regional poker community where he was a four-time WSOP Circuit ring winner. During the sentencing hearing, it was revealed that poker tournaments had become Janssen’s primary source of income since his 2025 arrest.
His attorney argued that a shorter sentence would allow him to return to larger venues to earn the required restitution more quickly. However, the prosecution maintained that a significant prison stay was necessary given the scope and duration of the bank fraud.
Janssen will report to a federal facility to begin his 36-month term immediately.
