Man’s decision to quit job to play poker pays off

Alex Todd’s win at the Grosvenor Poker Goliath Main Event this month is one for the history books

A 28-year-old Essex man who quit his job to play professional poker has won the biggest tournament in the UK and a share of the massive £1.3 million ($1,656,128) prize pool. Alex Todd acquired the moniker “King Toddie” after battling tough competition from nearly 11,500 other entrants at the Grosvenor Poker Goliath Main Event earlier this month.

Todd began playing poker with his dad and decided to quit his banking job during the 2020 Covid pandemic to start playing the game full-time. He plans to spend some of his Goliath tournament winnings to take his fiancée on a luxury vacation, invest in new golf clubs, and maybe a personalized license plate with his Instagram profile name “Toddie.”

“Conquering Goliath was a whirlwind of emotion and mental endurance. I was low on chips going into the second day of the tournament, starting with just 125,000. I went on a run and was able to build up a good stack,” said Todd.

He continued: “Years of grinding prepared me for the final table, and I was ready to seize the opportunity. From the moment I secured the victory, I have just felt a feeling of elation, and it doesn’t seem to going away any time soon. Although, nothing will beat my family telling me how proud of me they are.”

Goliath is the biggest live poker event not held in Las Vegas, taking place at the Grosvenor Casino Coventry. Poker Marketing Manager of Grosvenor Casinos, Luke Hobbs, said about Todd, “It will go down in Goliath tournament records as someone who has transformed their poker career. We wish Alex all the best for the future and enjoying his winnings.”
