Only a handful of poker players have been able to achieve multiple bracelet wins
Out of the 32 games held in the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) so far, a total of 12 have been dominated by previous bracelet holders. The most recent victor who claimed another win in this high-stakes tournament is John Monnette, a master of mixed games.
Winning his fifth gold bracelet, the Las Vegas resident emerged victorious in the $1,500 triple-double event by defeating 522 contenders and taking home $145,863. With his latest win in the series, Monnette has reached a milestone that not many other players in history has accomplished – winning five or more titles. Only 35 have reached this level. Additionally, this recent win has elevated his career earnings to almost $4 million.
Monnette’s remarkable performance at the event earned him 840 Card Player of the Year bracelets, which increased his total to 2,375. As a consequence, he secured the 40th position in the 2023 POY Race leaderboard, presented by Global Poker.
As the event entered its last day, there were still 18 players in contention for the win, with the experienced Benny Glaser taking the lead. Among them was Monnette, who started the day with a strong position and brought some noteworthy players to the game.
Patrick Leonard, an online tournament master, took home $60,915 for placing third. His chances of winning were initially threatened when he lost to Monnette during a three-man hand. He regained his composure, but eventually lost all his chips to Christopher Chung in a head-to-head round.
Chung and Monnette then battled for over two hours to determine the ultimate winner. Monnette emerged victorious after taking a decisive lead and winning the final hand with 8-6-4-3-2 on the second draw, followed by a pat on the third. Despite coming in second place, Chung still had reason to celebrate, earning a respectable $90,150 and boosting his total career tournament earnings to an impressive $276,000.
