The Main Event drew a record-breaking 1,698 entries, with a prize pool of $1.6 million
The Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) returned to Milwaukee’s Potawatomi Hotel & Casino for the 2025 Wisconsin State Poker Championship, and the event made history. The $1,110 Main Event drew a record-breaking 1,698 entries, setting a new benchmark for the largest poker tournament ever held in Wisconsin. The turnout created a prize pool of $1.64 million, far exceeding expectations and showcasing the state’s growing poker scene.
When play wrapped up, Wisconsin native Greg Shuda emerged as the champion, capturing $232,955 and his first MSPT trophy. Shuda, who only plays a few tournaments each year, outlasted a tough field and overcame a slight chip deficit in heads-up play against Mykle Robble. Before the final showdown, the pair agreed to adjust the remaining prize pool, locking up $190,000 for Shuda and $202,000 for Robble, with $42,955 left for the winner.
“It feels great, to be honest,” Shuda said after his victory. “The last tournament I played was this one in February, so to come back and win it means a lot.” His triumph marked a career-best payday and highlighted the potential of part-time players to shine on poker’s bigger stages.
The final table featured several familiar names, including all-time WSOPC ring leader Maurice Hawkins, who was the first to fall after losing a dramatic river card showdown. Doug Timmer and Frank Lagodich followed soon after. One key hand came when Shuda’s pocket tens hit a set on the river to eliminate Loki Abboud, flipping the momentum firmly in his favor.
In the final hand, Shuda’s A♥J♥ overcame Robble’s A♠10♦ after hitting a heart flush on the river. The win cemented Shuda’s place in MSPT history and brought the Wisconsin State Championship trophy home to a local favorite. The record turnout and thrilling finish made this year’s event one of the most memorable in MSPT history.
