Louise Ulrick goes from poker novice to poker pro in just a matter of weeks
Louise Ulrick has earned a seat at the European Poker Tour Prague Main Event. The 55-year-old former math teacher from the UK was victorious in the PokerStars x Poker Power Women’s Bootcamp Showdown at EPT Cyprus, an eight-week, women-only bootcamp hosted by PokerStars and Poker Power. The program was created for women who have never played poker and are interested in learning the game.
The 40 women in the bootcamp played in small PokerStars tournaments while learning from PokerStars Team Pro Jen Shahade. They played for a chance to win entry to a single-table tournament at EPT Cyprus with a tournament package to EPT Prague as the top prize.
Ulrick is employed as a licensee consultant and says she’s only been playing poker for a few months. “I can’t believe it,” she said after winning heads-up action over American Katie Hopkins. “Obviously, winning was the objective of coming, but you never quite think it’s going to happen. I didn’t feel confident when we were practicing live. I felt clumsy with all the cards and the chips and everything, but today came together.”
Power Poker is one of several organizations that help give women a unique space to learn poker. President and co-founder of Power Poker, Erin Lyndon, believes women can become empowered through poker by employing the talents that must be conquered professionally.
“Our innovative bootcamp program with PokerStars provides women with the platform and opportunity to go from zero to hero in an inclusive and supportive environment,” said Lyndon.
Ulrick, who will travel to EPT Prague in December, added. “Anybody who is thinking about learning poker, it is such a good game to play. You can learn so much about yourself. There are online resources that are great to have a go.”
