Over 3,000 entries were registered for the event, producing a prize pool of $2 million
The 2024 World Poker Tour (WPT) World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas kicked off with an impressive showing in its $800 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em event, featuring a $1 million guarantee. Drawing a massive 3,006 entries across six starting flights, the tournament more than doubled its initial promise, ultimately creating a prize pool of $2,089,170.
With payouts extending to 371 players, the event saw its top four finishers claim six-figure prizes. Sergio Soto of Mexico emerged victorious, claiming the title and the $318,623 top prize.
This win marks a career highlight for Soto, significantly surpassing his previous best cash of $13,254 from an 11th-place finish at a Venetian DeepStack event last summer. Soto’s triumph also earned him 600 Player of the Year (POY) points, further enhanced by a ninth-place finish in a $1,100 turbo event at the same series, bringing his total to 626 points and boosting his standings in the 2024 POY race.
The tournament featured notable performances from seasoned players, including two-time bracelet winner Dan Heimiller, bracelet winner Kathy Liebert, Matt Affleck, and David Jackson, all making deep runs. Their presence underscored the competitive spirit of the event, which is just one of 46 tournaments in the WPT World Championship schedule.
The series continues with the $5 million guaranteed $1,100 WPT Prime Championship and will build up to the highly anticipated $10,400 WPT World Championship main event starting on December 14. The series showcases the excitement and growth of professional poker, attracting players of all levels to compete for massive prizes in a world-class setting.
