The WPT wants to give a boost to the online poker experience
As online poker continues to increase in popularity, WPT Global is raising the stakes in 2024. It recently announced a new worldwide leaderboard that will pay prizes to the top players.
The new rankings will pay players who finish in the top 100 a share of $250,000 in cash, with the winner taking home a $100,000 prize package. The second and third-place finishers will win $25,000 on the leaderboard that dates back to December 24, 2023, with the final day to earn points this year on November 24.
Players can only earn points in a handful of tournaments, which are the biggest events run by WPT. The first are the WPT Seasonal events, which occur four times yearly.
WPT holds four mid-season festivals each year, and those looking to be at the top of the leaderboard should consider also playing in the Sunday Slam events. Qualifying tournaments and satellite events are not included in the points tally.
Not all tournaments will be equal when awarding leaderboard points. Higher buy-in tournaments will gain the most points, with each event winner earning a 1.5x bonus point multiplier. Only the top six finishers will earn points in each event.
The format allows those who play smaller buy-in tournaments to accumulate some points, but more wins would be required. WPT Global is taking serious measures to increase its brand while also being ready to award some serious compensation to players.
The current WPT leaderboard is available online, with updates made immediately after each qualifying event.
