One of the biggest tournaments of the year ended with a $23-million prize pool
The 2024 World Poker Tour (WPT) World Championship wrapped up at the Wynn Las Vegas, with Scott Stewart claiming the title and a career-defining payday of $2,563,900. The event attracted a large number of professionals looking to make their mark in the poker world.
Stewart, a seasoned poker professional from Long Beach, California, emerged victorious from a competitive field of 2,392 entries in the $10,400 buy-in event. This win not only secured his 19th career title but also significantly boosted his lifetime earnings to over $5.6 million.
The event, which spanned from December 14 to 21, generated a massive prize pool of $23,441,600, divided among the top 299 finishers. The final day saw six players return to the table, with Eddie Pak leading the pack and Chris Moorman, a two-time bracelet winner, close behind.
The early moments of the day were action-packed, with three players eliminated within the first 10 hands. Venezuelan player Christian Roberts exited in sixth place, followed by Canada’s Ryan Yu in fifth and Moorman finishing fourth for the second consecutive year.
Pak, who held the lead during three-handed play, suffered a critical setback after a misstep against Stewart’s full house. Pak’s journey ended in third place with $2 million, leaving Stewart and the UK’s Rob Sherwood to battle for the championship.
Heads-up play lasted over 100 hands, featuring dramatic swings in momentum. Stewart regained control with pocket kings against Sherwood’s pocket sixes in a decisive hand. Sherwood’s attempt to recover fell short, and he finished as the runner-up, earning $2.2 million.
Stewart celebrated the milestone victory with friends and expressed excitement for the future. Along with the cash prize and title, he earned 2,700 Card Player Player of the Year points, marking his fifth final-table finish of the year and strengthening his position in the 2024 standings.
