Poker players will gather to commemorate the late player on a special date
A handful of US poker rooms plan to host “Doyle Brunson Day” on October 2 (10/2), offering various promotions honoring “The Godfather of Poker,” who passed away at 89 in May ahead of the 2023 World Series of Poker. Brunson is famous for winning the WSOP Main Event in 1976 and 1977 while holding 10-2 on the final hand both times.
During this year’s WSOP, a memorial saw the poker community come together and declare 10/2 as Doyle Brunson Day. Poker rooms nationwide, including The Lodge near Austin, Texas, are offering special promotions to honor the legend.
Brunson’s former management company, Poker Royalty, is partnering with The Lodge, Peppermill Reno and three Live! poker rooms in Maryland and Pennsylvania to offer the poker community a memorable October 2.
The Lodge is celebrating by offering a $10,200 prize to a cash game player who has a winning hand with 10-2, and Peppermill in Nevada is offering $100 each time players hit a full house of a flush with 10-2 from 10:02 AM until 10:02 PM.
Live! poker rooms, including Philly Live!, is planning to reduce the high hand qualifier on 10/2 to tens full of deuces, pending approval from regulators. The World Poker Tour (WPT) will also offer a Doyle Brunson Day promotion to honor its former ambassador, with details yet to be released.
Brunson is a two-time world champion and is regarded as one of the best poker players of all time. He’s tied for second behind Phil Hellmuth with 10 WSOP bracelets. One of the most esteemed players in the 1970s and 1980s, Brunson continued playing at a high in cash games at Bellagio in Las Vegas until he passed away last May.
