Louis Garza wins the poker tournament and the girl
AP Louis Garza, a poker pro from Texas, walked away with a whopping $1.3 million after making an impressive win at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Event. That wasn’t the only highlight of the event, though, as he also took the opportunity to propose to his girlfriend, right on the stage.
Poker pro Garza added a historic piece of jewelry to his collection by winning his first WSOP bracelet, following up on his impressive Top 20 showing in the previous event and a circuit ring from earlier in 2018. His lifetime earnings have been estimated at around $1.8 million. Garza’s unconventional fashion sense was on full display during the tournament, as he opted for a sleeveless denim jacket, flashy accessories and Christian Dior shades.
Despite struggling early on, Garza managed to climb out of last place and ultimately triumph in the four-day competition’s finale on Saturday. Garza’s fate turned around when he adhered to a favorable game plan. He was pitted against Arthur Morris from Plano, his hometown, in a match that stirred up several refrains of “Texas forever!”
Unfortunately, Morris fell from the train during the journey. He was ahead in the final hand, but his short-lived advantage ended with the catch of a four on the river, giving Garza a set. Morris, a circuit player boasting of six WSOP Top 10s, scooped $809,000 as his prize.
Last Wednesday, the competition commenced with a prize of $6.8 million, attracting the participation of 731 contenders, including renowned poker figures like Stanislav Halatenko, who secured the third spot; Sam Soverel, who finished sixth; and Kosei Ichinose, who clinched the seventh position.
