Kristen Foxen does it again, with other players receiving their first recognition
The latest Global Poker Index (GPI) Player of the Year winners are here, and none of the names come as a surprise. One name, however, stands out for being a long-running winner.
Kristen Foxen earned 2,970.93 points to win the GPI Female Player of the Year after going back-to-back in 2019 and 2020, the first two years of the award, becoming the first to win it three times. She had 36 cashes during 2023, making 13 final tables and winning her third World Series of Poker bracelet in the $888 Crazy Eights online tournament.
Foxen’s biggest payday in 2023 was for $216,079 after finishing as runner-up in a $10,000 buy-in event at the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open last August. With over $6.8 million in lifetime earnings, she ranks 14th on Canada’s all-time list.
Bin Weng was unknown at the start of 2023 until he took first place at the $5,300 The Return: A Borgata Championship Event during the first week of the year for his first cash of over $1 million. He won six times in 2023, including a $2,227,054 payday at the $10,000 WPT EveryOne for One Drop. According to the Hendon Mob, Weng had just over $1 million in lifetime earnings before winning $6.6 million for the year.
Nick Pupillo would hold on to win the GPI Player of the Year in the mid-majors category by just 67.03 points over Preston McEwen. He had 53 cashes and took his third WSOP Circuit ring online in November for $36,974. He also won his first bracelet at the $2,500 Mixed Triple Draw Lowball event for $181,978 last summer. Pupillo won the award for top player on the Heartland Poker Tour in 2019.
The winners will be awarded their trophies at the annual GPI Awards in Las Vegas, which has yet to be scheduled, joining the other GPI Award winners in various categories.
