420 entries in the MGM National Harbor event helped create a game to remember
The $500 No-Limit Hold’em Monumental Stack at the Potomac Poker Open at MGM National Harbor drew 420 entries across two starting flights, creating a lively competition that wrapped up with Frayser Flores taking the top prize. After two days of play, Flores walked away with $35,275 and the event trophy, topping a field filled with both local talent and traveling grinders.
Day 2 began with 53 players still in contention, each chasing the chance at a six-figure prize pool. Nearly ten hours later, Flores was the last player holding chips, capping off a strong week in which he had already finished third in the $600 Opener for $61,000. The Peruvian-born player, who moved to the US just over two years ago, has found MGM National Harbor to be a fortunate venue. Earlier this year, he won a Moneymaker Tour event at the same property for $20,000.
Flores’s path to victory was anything but smooth. At the final table, he took an aggressive approach, frequently putting opponents to difficult decisions and knocking out four players along the way. Variance played its part as well. Twice he doubled up holding ace-jack, spiking trips to survive in key moments. One of those hands came against runner-up Zaid Alwan, who had Flores dominated with ace-king but ultimately had to settle for second place and $24,873.
The victory represents Flores’s largest outright win to date, eclipsing his Moneymaker Tour triumph. While grateful for the score, he said celebrations would remain modest, spent with his sister and brother rather than a wider circle, as he continues to adjust to life in the US.
Attention now shifts to the $3,000 Main Event at the Potomac Poker Open, where Flores confirmed he plans to take a couple of shots. Given his recent run, competitors may be keeping a close eye on him when the cards go in the air again.
