By exploiting your position, you can have a significant impact despite being at a chip disadvantage

Playing with a short stack in heads-up poker presents unique challenges, but it also provides opportunities for aggressive play and strategic positioning. When your chip stack is low, every decision becomes more critical, and maximizing your chances requires a focused approach.

One of the key strategies when playing a short stack heads-up is to be aggressive with your hand selection. Unlike full-table play, heads-up games often feature wider ranges, meaning that even weaker hands have more potential to win.

With a short stack, you don’t have the luxury of folding many hands, so you should be more willing to move all-in with a wider range of hands. A push can often force your opponent to fold weaker holdings, allowing you to chip up without contesting a big pot.

Position is also crucial when you’re playing a short stack. Being on the button (or in the small blind) gives you an advantage because you act first on every post-flop street. Use this to your benefit by raising with hands that might not typically warrant a large bet in a full-ring game. You can steal blinds or force your opponent into difficult situations with a well-timed all-in or raise.

However, with a short stack, it’s essential to be mindful of your opponent’s tendencies. If they are a tight player, you can take advantage of their hesitation and push aggressively. Against an opponent who is more aggressive or calling frequently, you should tighten your range and be selective about when to commit your stack.

Another important aspect is understanding the math of the game. In heads-up poker, with fewer players involved, pot odds and implied odds become essential in determining whether a call or raise is profitable. You need to calculate whether the risk of going all-in is worth the potential reward, particularly when the chips are limited.
