Thoughtful adjustments to stack size, opponent behavior, and position create a more profitable heads-up game

Heads-up poker changes the dynamics of preflop play, especially when the action reaches 4-bets and 5-bets. With only two players involved, ranges are wider and aggression increases. Understanding when to jam, flat, or fold in these situations can make a major difference in long-term results.

Stack size is one of the most important factors when facing a 4-bet or considering a 5-bet. With shallow stacks, many decisions become straightforward because players are already close to committing their chips. In these cases, strong hands often become automatic jams rather than tricky post-flop situations.

Premium hands such as pocket kings, pocket aces, and ace-king are typically strong enough to 5-bet jam against most opponents. Heads-up play rewards aggression, and these hands perform well even if called. Jamming also prevents opponents from realizing equity with speculative holdings.

Medium-strength hands require more careful thought. Hands like ace-queen suited or pocket tens can sometimes be strong enough to continue but not always ideal for a jam. Flat-calling a 4-bet with these hands keeps weaker holdings in play while controlling risk.

Player tendencies matter just as much as hand strength. Some opponents 4-bet very frequently in heads-up games, attempting to apply constant pressure. Against these players, widening your 5-bet jam range can punish their aggression and discourage future bluffs.

On the other hand, tighter players rarely 4-bet without a strong range. When facing these opponents, folding marginal hands becomes the better option. Even in heads-up play, discipline can save chips and avoid running into dominating holdings.

Position also influences these decisions. The player in position has more flexibility after the flop, making flat calls more appealing in certain spots. Out of position, jamming can sometimes be the simplest and most effective option.
