Gambling Legislation

Two states on a path toward online casino approval in 2024

Indiana and New Hampshire still have online gaming on the table

Indiana and New Hampshire legislators are planning to reintroduce online casino bills in 2024. However, this time, the proposed legislation will take separate paths to the table. They hope that’ll guarantee the online casino bills symbolize winning gambles if they become law.

Indiana Senator Jon Ford and New Hampshire Senator Timothy P. Lang Sr. revealed their plans on July 14 at the National Council of Legislators from Gaming States (NCLGS) Summer Meeting in Denver. Both spoke at the event called the 2023 iGaming Legislative Recap + Discussion on the Opportunities and Challenges of the Legalization of iGaming.

Ford, R-Terre Haute, feels that by adding online casino legalization to a comprehensive gambling bill, it may perform better than the proposed solo online casino bill. According to Matthew Kredell of PlayUSA, the bill could improve responsible gambling protections, modify marketing and advertising regulations, and permit retail casinos to relocate to acquire revenue.

Lang, a Republican from Sanbornton, spoke at the same event as the NCLGS president. Kredell reported that Lang intends to include charitable casinos in the 2024 New Hampshire bill he seeks to pre-file in September. In New Hampshire, retail casinos are known as charitable casinos because the revenue they generate goes to charities instead of the state.

In April, Rick G. Newman testified against SB104, saying he was concerned that legal online casino gambling would take revenue away from the charitable gaming industry and existing land-based casinos. The former House member and lobbyist spoke on behalf of the New Hampshire Charitable Gaming Operators Association (NHCGOA). He said that he can’t remark on what Lang is planning, adding that they haven’t “had a conversation at this point about anything specific related to iGaming.”
