A state senator hopes to build on the success of the Seminole tribe’s gaming expansion
Gambling is again the hot issue in Florida politics, as State Senator Blaise Ingoglia pushes for expansion with the latest proposal, SB 1054, which aims to relax specific gambling regulations as Miami braces for the effects of the new legislation.
According to a Local 10 news report, the bill would toss the requirement for licensees to verify they haven’t been previously prohibited or stripped down when they attempt to renew their applications with the Florida Gaming Control Commission.
In places like Citrus, Hernando and Sumter counties and a northern wedge of Pasco County, Ingoglia is taking his latest legislative risk seriously. The proposed bill would also give approval for greyhound racing licensees to shut their doors and relocate somewhere else if they adhere to regulations. For those that provide slots, it requires that a resettled pari-mutuel installation’s games are positioned at the authorized relocation venue.
Miami billionaire Jeffrey Soffer, owner of the new towering Las Vegas Fontainebleau, has been in the news recently after reports say he’s been dating supermodel Gisele Bündchen. Soffer’s reputation in the city is being closely monitored, as the new law could drastically transform the Miami Beach gambling landscape.
The bill also seeks to protect migrated pari-mutuel installations from local regulations against establishing new cardrooms, meaning that once a facility has legally relocated, it won’t be targeted by local constraints any longer. Gambling venues could have more leeway to relocate to new areas and be protected by state law instead of local zoning ordinances that usually prevail during development controversies.
