After a long hiatus and movement on the sports betting front, it’s time to tackle casinos
Brazilian Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino, will attend a meeting announced by a political group to examine regulating gambling, bingos, and casinos in the country. Bill 442/1991 has already been approved by the Chamber of Deputies and is now with the Senate.
Parliament members who support legalizing gambling and casinos in Brazil argue that revenue could bring in up to 20 billion reais annually and provide up to 650,000 new jobs. As a deputy, Sabino had already supported government gaming regulation, according to the Blog do Noblat no Metrópoles.
If approved in the Senate, PL 442 will allow casinos to be managed by resort or leisure venues, with a series of requirements, such as the number of hotel rooms and restaurants. Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) previously suggested that regulating sports betting could be a test prior to launching casinos in Brazil. However, there is still no indication that House members would accept the proposal.
Brazilian weekly news magazine Veja reported that the Minister of Tourism has met with 81 congress members and opened a broader dialogue than his predecessor, Daniela Carneiro. The government is temporarily debating backing the project that would legalize gambling in Brazil, known as the ‘Legal Framework for Gambling. ‘
In an interview with Globo, Sabino emphasized that the project favors the tourism industry, saying that “the majority of the government” he’s spoken with supports him. Minister of Development, Industry, and Trade Geraldo Alckmin met in July with Mor Weizer of Playtech, a developer of online casino games.
Brasilia Mayor Arthur Lira is also interested in the bill. The project also has support from PP President, Senator Ciro Nogueira; however, the evangelical bench is opposed to the project.
