The company claims to be the first cruise line to accept crypto for its operations
Virgin Voyages has unveiled its latest innovation in the cruise industry: an Annual Pass program launching in 2025, which will allow customers to pay using cryptocurrency. This makes Virgin Voyages the first cruise line to integrate Bitcoin payments into its offerings. The Annual Pass, priced at $120,000 plus taxes per person, provides unlimited cruises for a year on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Annual Pass builds on the success of Virgin’s earlier Season Pass. This program is tailored for remote workers seeking a “work from sea” lifestyle.
Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Group, expressed excitement about expanding the concept, emphasizing the opportunity for travelers to explore endless destinations on any of Virgin’s ships. The pass includes perks such as a Sea Terrace cabin with a private balcony, laundry services, internet access, and a $100 bar tab on each voyage.
Accepting Bitcoin for this program highlights Virgin’s commitment to embracing emerging technologies. While other travel companies have dabbled in blockchain or cryptocurrency-based payments, Virgin Voyages’ decision to incorporate Bitcoin could attract crypto enthusiasts, particularly those with substantial holdings. For affluent crypto investors, the program presents a unique way to spend digital assets on a luxury experience.
Though Bitcoin is currently the only cryptocurrency accepted, Virgin has not disclosed whether it plans to include other digital currencies like stablecoins or Bitcoin alternatives in the future. By integrating cryptocurrency payments, Virgin Voyages may inspire broader adoption across the travel sector and open new opportunities for collaboration with tech-savvy and affluent travelers.
