The Argentine millionaire had been missing for a week
A missing Argentinian cryptocurrency millionaire and Instagram influencer has been found dead, and police suspect he was murdered after his body was found dismembered in a suitcase. Crypto trader and influencer Fernando Pérez Algaba was reported missing on July 18 after failing to answer his phone and return the keys to a rented apartment, according to local media reports. A group of children found his remains less than a week later, on July 23, in the town of Ingeniero Budge, near the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires.
Algaba’s amputated legs and forearms were found in the suitcase, and police uncovered a torso on July 24 after draining the stream where the suitcase was found. The next day, a head was found in a backpack.
Fingerprint analysis and tattoos helped identify the missing millionaire. The autopsy showed he was shot three times before his body was dismembered. Investigators believe Algaba’s murder was possibly debt-related and the perpetrators were part of a professional outfit. Police have arrested one possible suspect in connection with the case.
Algaba was reportedly a crypto trader in Buenos Aires, where he ran an office that employed 25 other traders. He had also built up a large fan base on Instagram, with over 917,000 followers. The majority of the content centers on luxury cars and his dog.
He also reportedly had debts of 900,000 Argentine pesos ($3,300) in bounced checks, 1.2 million Argentine pesos ($4,400) owed to several banks, and another $70,000 in debt related to a bounced check.
A series of bizarre and sudden deaths of crypto billionaires drove wild theories in the district in late 2022, with five people suffering an untimely demise between October and December. Crypto dealer Javier Biosca, Amber Group co-founder Tiantian Kullander, MakerDAO co-founder Nikolai Mushegian, Russian crypto billionaire Vyacheslav Taran, and majority Bithumb shareholder Park Mo all died under mysterious circumstances.
