A reverse merger with an established FinTech company will allow Animoca to make the move
Animoca Brands, one of the largest venture capital firms in the crypto sector, is preparing to go public on Nasdaq through a reverse merger with fintech and AI company Currenc Group. The two companies announced that they have signed a non-binding term sheet for Currenc to acquire all of Animoca’s issued shares, forming a single publicly listed entity under the Animoca Brands name. Once completed, Animoca shareholders would hold roughly 95% of the merged company, while Currenc investors would retain the remaining 5%.
The merger is expected to close in 2026, creating what Animoca describes as the first publicly listed digital asset conglomerate. The combined company plans to focus on expanding its footprint in blockchain technology, tokenized assets, decentralized finance (DeFi), and artificial intelligence. The move would also give Animoca access to US public markets—something the Hong Kong-based firm has long sought to achieve.
Animoca’s portfolio is one of the most extensive in the crypto ecosystem, including investments in 628 companies and organizations. Its holdings span blockchain gaming, Web3 infrastructure, and decentralized science projects. Co-founder Yat Siu said the merger would “usher in a new asset class” and give investors exposure to the rapidly growing altcoin economy.
Currenc Group, founded in 2011 by fintech entrepreneur King Ong Kong, specializes in AI-driven financial services, e-wallets, and cross-border payments. In 2024 alone, the company processed over $5.4 billion in transactions and facilitated more than 13 million cross-border transfers.
Industry analysts view the merger as a sign of maturation for digital asset firms looking for stronger institutional credibility. The Nasdaq listing could give Animoca greater access to capital markets and investor confidence, positioning the firm to expand globally and continue shaping the future of blockchain-based finance.
