Understanding the terminology can help players improve their chances of winning
Online roulette, like any other casino game, comes with its own set of specific terms and jargon that players should be familiar with to fully understand the betting process and gameplay. This can give any player an advantage before getting started.
Inside bets are placed on specific numbers or small groups of numbers on the roulette table. Inside bets have higher payouts but lower odds of winning.
Outside bets are placed on larger groups of numbers or characteristics of the numbers (e.g., odd/even, red/black). Outside bets have lower payouts but higher odds of winning.
A straight bet is placing a bet on a single number. This has the highest payout but the lowest probability of winning. Alternatively, a split bet is betting on two adjacent numbers on the table by placing the chip on the line between them.
A street bet is betting on a row of three numbers by placing the chip on the edge of the row, while a corner bet is betting on a group of four numbers that form a square by placing the chip on the common corner.
A column bet refers to betting on one of the three vertical columns of numbers on the table. On the other hand, a dozen bet is betting on a group of 12 numbers, divided into the first (1-12), second (13-24), or third (25-36) dozen.
Red/Black Bet is betting on the ball landing on either a red or black number. Odd/Even Bet means betting on the ball landing on an odd or even number. High/Low Bet is betting on the ball landing on either the high numbers (19-36) or low numbers (1-18).
Some European roulette tables offer the En Prison rule, where even-money bets remain on the table for the next spin if the ball lands on zero. There’s also the La Partage rule, another European rule where half of even-money bets are returned to the player if the ball lands on zero.
