The puck line rewards bettors who price the margin, not just the winner

NHL spread betting is different from spread betting in higher-scoring sports because most hockey puck lines sit at 1.5 goals. That small margin creates tricky pricing. A team can control long stretches of a game and still fail to cover. Empty-net goals, overtime rules, goaltending changes and late-game score effects all matter, so bettors need more than a simple read on which team is better.

The first common mistake is laying -1.5 with a favorite just because the moneyline price looks expensive. A team priced at -220 may still win by one goal often enough to make the puck line poor value. Hockey has a heavy number of one-goal results. Before taking a favorite on the spread, check whether that team creates enough shot volume, high-danger chances and third-period pressure to separate.

Another mistake is ignoring goalie confirmation. Starting goaltenders can move a line quickly. A backup goalie does not automatically ruin a bet, but it changes expected save percentage, rebound control and penalty-kill confidence. NHL betting without goalie context is thin work.

Bettors also overrate recent final scores. A 5-1 win may include two empty-net goals. A 4-3 loss may include strong underlying play from the losing side. Shot quality, special teams, rest spots and travel matter more than the headline score.

Underdog puck lines can be useful, but they are not automatic safety bets. Taking +1.5 at a heavy price can create poor risk-reward if the return is too small. The same applies to chasing plus-money spreads on weak teams with tired legs.
