The government is pushing ahead with a casino law, but the public may change its direction
Thailand’s plan to legalize casinos may face a public referendum, as Democrat Party MP Jurin Laksanawisit called on the government to seek voter input on the controversial proposal. Speaking recently, Jurin argued that the cost of a referendum, estimated at 3 billion baht (US$88 billion), would be justified compared to the potential societal and economic impact of moving forward without broader consensus.
The debate centers around the Entertainment Complex Business Bill, recently approved by the Cabinet. The legislation would allow the construction of entertainment complexes where casinos would serve as the main attraction. The proposal has sparked mixed reactions, with advocates citing economic growth and tourism benefits, while critics raise concerns about social consequences, such as increased gambling addiction.
Jurin, a former leader of the Democrat Party, outlined three key reasons for advocating a referendum. First, he highlighted the far-reaching effects of legalizing casinos on Thailand’s society, economy, and political landscape. Second, he noted that public opinion remains deeply divided on the issue.
Finally, he pointed out that casino legalization was not part of the election platforms of the political parties that won the 2023 election. Jurin suggested that if a majority of voters opposed the initiative, the government should scrap the project altogether.
The Democrat Party itself has yet to take a unified stance on the bill, reflecting the broader uncertainties surrounding the proposal. The call for a referendum adds another layer of complexity to an already contentious issue, underscoring the importance of public opinion in shaping the country’s policy direction.
Whether the government will heed this call remains to be seen, as the debate over casino legalization continues to evolve.
