Women's poker advocacy group launches new inclusion campaign

The campaign focuses on the Hendon Mob and Global Poker Index

Pocket Queens is one of the foremost advocate groups for women’s rights in poker, and it recently launched a campaign seeking to realign the largest tournament databases in the poker industry.

You Count, Be Counted is an initiative undertaken by the group on September 15 that calls for all female players to confirm they’re correctly gendered on professional live poker databases, the Hendon Mob and Global Poker Index.

Misgendering has emerged as a concern within several databases as an increasing number of women achieve success in professional poker. Pocket Queens defines misgendering as when “individuals are incorrectly classified by their gender.”

The problem is most common with women bearing non-English or gender-neutral names, such as Jay, Teri, and Alida. Jennifer Newell, a poker player and journalist, is helping drive the initiative and told CardsChat that ensuring accurate identification of women is crucial in establishing their presence within the game.

Breakout poker star Georgina James spoke to CardsChat last January at the PokerStars Players No Limit Hold ’em Championship (PSPC), where she said that playing online gave her more confidence and a community of friends that helped her transition into the often intimidating realm of live tournament poker and live casinos.

Various efforts have been made to make poker more inclusive, such as the Kellogg School of Management business course and a recent Netflix documentary called Poker Queens.

Nonetheless, these endeavors will prove futile if accomplished women are not adequately acknowledged, which is why Pocket Queens and chair Victoria Livschitz request all women poker players to check their listing on Hendon Mob and contact the site’s support staff if they discover they’ve been misgendered in the database.
