Residents are beginning to vote on Amendment 5, which would allow one more casino in the state
Missouri voters are deciding on the possibility of adding a new casino to the state. The proposed measure, known as Amendment 5, aims to expand the number of casino licenses from 13 to 14, allowing for a new gaming facility near the Lake of the Ozarks on the Osage River. The initiative is being led by Bally’s Corporation and the Osage River Gaming and Convention Committee (OGCC).
The project, if approved, would include not only a casino but also a hotel, conference center, and retail outlets. Bally’s has already shown interest in the potential license, though it’s open for other bidders as well. The new development would be located near the Bagnell Dam and could help attract more visitors to the region.
This isn’t the only gambling-related proposal on Missouri’s November ballot. Another initiative, backed by sports betting giants DraftKings and FanDuel, seeks to legalize statewide mobile and retail sports betting. While this initiative has received support from many, it faces opposition from several casino operators, including Caesars Entertainment, which has contributed millions to a campaign against it.
The passing of Amendment 5 would override a 2008 cap on casino licenses and change rules regarding casinos’ proximity to water, making construction on or near man-made bodies of water possible. The new facility would be allowed within 500 feet of certain flood zones, as defined by FEMA.
An estimated $14.4 million in annual tax revenue from the new casino would be directed toward educational programs in the state. The Show Me State voters will have the final say on the initiative, which only needs a simple majority to pass.
Additionally, the Osage Nation is planning its own casino in the same area, which has led to some tension between the two projects.
