The Rock, Oprah Winfrey and cryptocurrency are contributing to Maui’s recovery
The People’s Fund of Maui relief fund to support the Maui community was started by celebrities Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to provide financial support to those affected by the recent wildfires. The fund also accepts cryptocurrency donations.
Wildfires broke out on Maui in early August, with more than 2,500 acres burned and massive personal loss and property damage. In a recent X post, The Rock verified that 100% of the donations will go to fire victims, saying, “Every adult resident who lives in the affected area and was displaced by the wildfires in Lahaina and Kula is eligible to receive $1,200 per month to help them through this period of recovery.”
Donations to the People’s Fund of Maui are accepted in numerous fiat currencies and cryptocurrencies. The fund will accept donations in Bitcoin, Ethereum, Doge, and various other options. Several other relief efforts seek to help the wildfire victims supported by A-list celebrities, as well.
Oprah reiterated that the intention is to hand the donations directly to the survivors and let them decide their own path to recovery. “People being able to have their own agency, being able to make decisions for themselves — about what they need and what their family needs — that is our goal,” she explained.
All Hands and Hearts is a disaster relief organization that’s been accepting cryptocurrency and fiat donations to aid local Maui residents after the devastating fires. Olga Ruggiero, chief of organizational integration and events at All Hands and Hearts, said, “Cryptocurrency donations, as any other type of donations, are helping to provide essential support after the devastating wildfires. The crypto industry continues to band together with communities around the world in need.”
