Essential terminology for online roulette

Understanding the vocabulary is fundamental to enjoying the roulette experience

Visiting an online casino means having an endless menu of options at your fingertips, including slots, card games and more. One of the consistent options is roulette, and to fully immerse yourself in the game and understand its mechanics, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the terminology.

Inside bets are wagers placed on specific numbers or a combination of numbers within the grid of the roulette table. Examples include straight bets (betting on a single number), split bets (betting on two adjacent numbers), and street bets (betting on three consecutive numbers in a row).

Outside bets are wagers placed outside the main number grid and offer higher odds of winning, but with lower payouts. Popular outside bets include red or black (betting on the color of the winning number), odd or even (betting on the parity of the winning number), and dozen bets (betting on one of three groups of 12 numbers).

A straight-up bet is when a player places a wager on a single number. If the ball lands on that specific number, the player receives a payout at the highest odds.

The house edge refers to the statistical advantage the casino has over players. In roulette, it is represented by the green zero (and double zero in American roulette). The house edge varies depending on the type of roulette game being played.

The wheel is the spinning mechanism with numbered pockets where the ball is dropped during each spin. Online roulette games use virtual wheels with realistic graphics and animations.

A spin refers to the act of initiating a roulette round. It starts when the dealer spins the wheel and releases the ball into it. Once the ball comes to rest in a numbered pocket, the spin concludes.

The payout is the amount of money a player receives for a winning bet. It is determined by the type of bet placed and the corresponding odds.

RNG stands for Random Number Generator, which is a computer algorithm used in online roulette to ensure fair and random outcomes. The RNG generates unpredictable results, replicating the randomness of a physical roulette wheel.
